Human capital is a vital contributor to economic growth in communities, hence improve of household income.
These same communities are required to build huge labor markets to accommodate mature adults already employed and younger adults beginning their careers, as well as an exponentially growing youth population.
Rural communities, like the majority of the Bamasaaba coffee growing regions, are agriculturally based with Arabica coffee as a seasonal cash crop; there's great interest in cultivating co-cash crops or sub-cash crops so as to increase the Human Capital Index(HCI) and, more important, to eradicate poverty. The HCI is defined as the amount of human capital that a child born today can expect to achieve in view of the risks of poor health and poor education currently prevailing in the country where that child lives.
Through investments made by Ledge Group LLC memebers, Ukanda Ledge farmers continue to integrate coffee with sub-cash crops which are selected depending to the altitude, type of soils and the weather. However, we still other challenges, which contribute to questions like. With 3% annual increase in Uganda's population defragmentation, which Bagisu are no prisoners, can we translate this increment, directly or proportionally, to harvest quality? How can we encourage household agricultural investment, or rather, how can a farmer be empowered to increase investments to become a commercial farmers? Since, we rely on rain-fed subsistence agriculture, are there ways for farmers to overcome risks from adverse weather.
